Health Care Magazine Profiles Retiring Dean of the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing

Pulse, the health care magazine of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, profiled Dr. Susan Gunby, retiring dean of the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing in its May edition. Dr. Gunby is returning to teaching after leading the College for two decades.

Macon Commencement draws Media Coverage

Mercer’s Macon Commencement - which included 490 graduates of the College of Liberal Arts, School of Engineering, Stetson School of Business and Economics, Tift College of Education and Townsend School of Music - drew a capacity crowd of more than 2,700 family and well-wishers to the University Center. Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue delivered the commencement address and urged graduates to seek out new ways to serve others. Among the media outlets that covered the event were The Macon Telegraph, 13 WMAZ TV and Fox 24 TV.

New York Times Looks to Mercer Professor for Insight on Obama’s Abortion Tight-Rope Walk

Prompted by a planned commencement address to the University of Notre Dame and the impending appointment of a justice to the United States Supreme Court, President Obama has found himself in an unwanted debate on abortion The New York Times reported May 14. The newspaper turned to Mercer’s Dr. David Gushee, Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics, for insights on what President Obama will do to walk a fine line in the debate.

Christian Ethics Professor Weighs in Following New Poll on Evangelical Opinions of Torture

A new poll by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that nearly two-thirds of white evangelical Christians in the United States believe torture can be justified against terror suspects. This poll has prompted debate in the mainstream and religious press and many media outlets have turned to Dr. David Gushee, Mercer University’s Distinguished Professor of Christian Ethics, for help in understanding the poll, and the trends it represents. The Associated Press interviewed Dr. Gushee for its story, which has run in a number of print, online and television outlets. In addition, a story in Nashville’s The Tennessean has been distributed widely. The Pew poll echoes results from a similar poll commissioned in September by Mercer and Faith and Public Life of Southern white evangelicals.

Mercer On Mission Trip To Aid Vietnamese Amputees Earns Media Coverage in Macon

A Mercer On Mission trip later this month will provide Vietnamese amputees with low-cost leg prosthetics designed by Mercer engineering faculty and students. The service-learning project garnered attention from the Clinton Global Initiative University earlier this year, and now is garnering media coverage as the date for the trip looms. The Macon Telegraph featured the project on its front page on May 4, as biomedical engineering professor Dr. Ha Van Vo and his students created parts for the legs.
