A mild earthquake in Central Georgia on April 4 sent the local media in search of an expert to discuss the event. 13 WMAZ TV turned to the expertise of Dr. Randall Peters, chair of the Department of Physics. Dr. Peters is the inventor of the world’s first digital seismograph, and his instrument recorded the event and its aftershocks.

The Baptist Standard, the Texas Baptist news journal, quoted two Mercer professors in a story on the challenges New Urbanism presents to churches. Mercer’s Dr. Peter Brown, associate provost and professor of philosophy, and Dr. Ronald W. Spaceweather.com, an astronomy news site, featured a photo from Mercer physics professor Dr. Matt Marone’s class, introductory astronomy, taken at Lake Tobesofkee on Feb. 5. The group was observing the International Space Station, which was visible in the night sky that evening.

First Year Seminar Experiential students in professor Randall Harshbarger’s class ended their semester with a “Taste of Pleasant Hill” dinner. The event was the culmination of a number of service learning projects the students and Pleasant Hill community had worked on together. The Macon Telegraph covered the event in its Dec. 5 edition.

Dr. Eimad Houry, chair of the political science department and director of the international affairs program, was asked by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to provide analysis of President-elect Barack Obama’s role in the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. Dr. Gregory Domin, associate professor of political science, helped The Macon Telegraph explain record turnouts for the election in a Nov. 2 story. Domin will also appear as a guest expert on the Fox 24 TV news show “Fox Files” on Nov. 3 and Nov. 5 at 10:30 p.m. In addition, he will provide election day analysis on radio for WNNG 1350 AM in Warner Robins from 7-8:30 p.m, with a simulcast on 99.9 FM. He and Dr. Christopher Grant, also an associate professor in political science will provide analysis from 9 p.m. to midnight for 13 WMAZ TV.
