Mercer’s groundbreaking conference on faith, science and the environment, “Caring for Creation: A Scientific and Theological Response,” begins Oct. 29, and concludes Oct. 31 with a green day of service. The conference, and its topic, caring for God’s Creation, are drawing a lot of buzz ahead of the event. A new poll by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that nearly two-thirds of white evangelical Christians in the United States believe torture can be justified against terror suspects. This poll has prompted debate in the mainstream and religious press and many media outlets have turned to Dr. David Gushee, Mercer University’s Distinguished Professor of Christian Ethics, for help in understanding the poll, and the trends it represents. The Associated Press interviewed Dr. Gushee for its story, which has run in a number of print, online and television outlets. In addition, a story in Nashville’s The Tennessean has been distributed widely. The Pew poll echoes results from a similar poll commissioned in September by Mercer and Faith and Public Life of Southern white evangelicals.

A story in the Dec. 19 edition of the Los Angeles Times focused on conservative evangelicals’ wariness of the coming Obama Administration and included analysis from a Mercer professor. Dr. David Gushee, Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics, tells the nation’s fourth largest newspaper that the fears of many conservative evangelicals may not be warranted and comes from Barack Obama’s party affiliation, rather than his record.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution featured a story on Nov. 11 about Dr. David Gushee, Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics, and his efforts to lobby President-elect Barack Obama to issue an executive order once in office, which would ban torture by the United States. Gushee organized at National Summit on Torture at the Atlanta campus in September and has been a strong advocate for an end to torture by the United States. He also founded the group Evangelicals for Human Rights, in part to advocate against abusive practices by U.S. forces against their prisoners.
