Mercer On Mission’s trip to Vietnam to deliver and fit Mercer-designed prosthetics to amputees there, as well as to treat hundreds of ailing patients drew media attention based on a presentation the trip’s students and professor made Oct. 21. Dr. Ha Van Vo and eight of the 14 students who went on the trip in June presented about their experiences, plans for further trips and ongoing fund-raising efforts for future trips. WMAZ TV, Fox 24 TV and The Macon Telegraph were all on hand for the event.

The Macon Telegraph tracked down students from several area colleges to find out about their summer study-abroad experiences. The July 16 story included several comments from Mercer staff and students who went on Mercer On Mission trips this summer. The Mercer On Mission program offers a unique blend of service-learning and study abroad that encourages students to learn while engaging the world.

The Macon Telegraph featured student athletes and engineering students Stacey Condra and J.T. Odum on the front page of the Sport section on Sunday, May 7. The two, a softball and baseball player, respectively, are on the Mercer On Mission trip to Vietnam. They are part of a group of students that is in Vietnam to fit Mercer-designed, low-cost prosthetics to people who have lost legs to landmines and other left-over ordnance from the many conflicts in that country.

A Mercer On Mission trip later this month will provide Vietnamese amputees with low-cost leg prosthetics designed by Mercer engineering faculty and students. The service-learning project garnered attention from the Clinton Global Initiative University earlier this year, and now is garnering media coverage as the date for the trip looms. The Macon Telegraph featured the project on its front page on May 4, as biomedical engineering professor Dr. Ha Van Vo and his students created parts for the legs.

A group of Mercer University students in the Mercer On Mission program are working to record their trip to Costa Rica on their own blog, http://merceronmissioncostarica.blogspot.com. They will be posting throughout their journey through the Central American country, which began July 7 and will end on July 25.
The 25 Mercer students are led by Gregory Domin, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, and Robert Hargrove, Ph.D., professor of chemistry and environmental sciences.
